Description: There’s a reason most of us love Zaehnsdorf fine bindings: the details. This one has many fine, special details that make it an utter delight to view. Let’s start with the leather. The triple inlaid polished morocco panel binding on the front and back covers alludes to 18th century bindings (very appropriate for this title), and the colors and textures of the leather blend beautifully, with gilt rules between each. The spine features raised bands, gilt, and leather panels that compliment the other colors. Inside, we find richly gilt turn ins, gorgeous watered silk doublures and free endpapers (check out the gilt work on the free silk endpapers- a classic Zaehnsdorf touch), Zaehnsdorf’s gilt pallet signature. Top edge gilt. Original covers bound in. The book itself: a VG+ first edition of “The English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century” by William Makepeace Thackeray. Octavo, with publisher’s advertisements at rear. An increasingly scarce Thackeray volume in beautiful shape. A collection of seven lectures Thackeray delivered to the Society for the Employment and Relief of the Poor, covering the lives and works of Swift, Congreve, Addison, Smollett, Fielding, Pope, Hogarth, Stern, and others. An exquisite binding of a scarce first edition. An excellent gift for any fan of 18th and 19th century British literature. Condition: VG+ slight wear in small areas of spine and cover. Interior pages quite clear and bright. Old bookseller notes in pencil on corner of early free paper. Excellent shape for a 170 year old book.
