Description: This is a 10 1/2 by 7 3/8inch (image size) original drypoint or etching of a young woman asleep. It was done by listed New York artist Eleanor Modrakowska in 1939. It is pencil-signed below the image. It is on paper measuring 14 5/8 by 10 7/8 inches. It is in very good condition It has a small brown stain on the lower part of the sheet covering her legs. There is also a slight diagonal crease in the upper left hand quadrant. The lower right blank non-image area has a slight smudge and the very bottom on the sheet has a stain. These will be covered when matted and framed. See the photos and above condition report. It will be shipped for $18 via UPS. Eleanor Modrakowska was born in College Point, New York in 1879 . She was a painter and etcher who painted mainly portraits, landscapes, and flower studies. She went to Europe at the age of years where she immediately developed a love for art and frequently visited museums in Firenze and Manchen. At age 14 she had her first teacher, the Czechoslovakian artist Anton Azbe. Upon her return to the US, she studied in New York at the Art Students League. Modrakowska became well-known for bold, vital brushstrokes and her use of brilliant colors. She was a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the Society of American Etchers, and the Chicago Society of Etchers. She lived for an unspecified time in Colorado, Wisconsin and Lake Placid, N.Y. besides her apparently longest residence in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y. Among other places she exhibited at the Kraushaar Gallery in New York and her drypoint self-portrait (Reflection) dating from 1936 is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It was a gift from the Chicago Society of Etchers. She died in New York in 1955.
