The obverse was designed by William Cousins, who also modified John Flanagan’s Washington quarter obverse for the 50 States series. It depicts a gymnast in motion against a background of the American flag. Steven M. Bieda’s reverse design features the Olympic torch and an olive branch, with the inscription CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS (for the Olympic motto, "Faster, Higher, Stronger").
