Description: This is an extremely fine World War II U.S. Navy M1 Steel Helmet used by a gun crew member that remains in excellent shipboard used condition. The shell has a front rim seam and swivel bales which dates its manufacture prior to 1943. The helmet has a blue/gray painted finish over cork aggregate with the usual wear around the rim seam. The brim is painted with a yellow for an unknown designation … perhaps a gun mount station. Additionally, there is a marking on the front that appears to be '35' over' '57' in worn white paint. The rear of the helmet is stenciled along the lower edge with ‘NO. 1 /40 MM’ in red paint. The heat temper number on the underside of the brim is 624A. The light khaki chinstraps are with black finished steel hook and claw hardware at the ends and exhibit some very light fraying at the bales. The M1 liner is painted with a matching blue/ gray finish as that of the shell. It is manufactured by Westinghouse and marked with their ‘W’ logo in the dome. The suspension system webbing is of light khaki canvas and has a nice leather sweatband in place. The original brown leather chinstrap is fitted snugly over the visor of the helmet. The markings on the snap-in nap strap are faded and illegible. This helmet is a beautiful looking example as used aboard U.S. naval shipboard gun crew members when at battle stations in combat actions during the Second World War. A real historical gem! 9155
