The 12th saw action late in 1944 in Europe. Elements of the 12th liberated French VIP Prisoners in a battle where American and regular German Army Soldiers fought the SS to save the prisoners in one of only two or so actions where American and German Troops joined forces. It was the Battle for Castle Itter, very late in the War. The 12th fought the Germans in phase II of the Ardennes Offensive, Nordwind, where the Germans dubbed the 12th the suicide division. They also sealed the Colmar Pocket, relieving the fighting in the Vosges, and liberated Dachau sub camps and a Polish Officer POW Camp. They also were detached and assigned to Patton's Army with patches and markings removed, earning the nickname The Mystery Division. This patch was removed from a uniform. It is in about fair to fair condition and is at least 79 years old, probably older. The Division fought in Europe although elements were sent to bolster the taking of Manilla and reinforcing the Philippines Elements of the 12th liberated French VIP Prisoners in a battle where American and regular German Army Soldiers fought the SS to save the prisoners. They also sealed the Colmar Pocket, relieving the fighting in the Vosges, and liberated Dachau sub camps and a Polish Officer POW Camp.
