The Photo Post Card depicts the torpedoed USS Covington going under 50 miles off Brest France. Covington was a Troopship torpedoed by a German U Boat. ARA was the American Recreation Association, a charitable organization that captured vessels and sea life in a series of photo post cards that were given to ships' crews. This photo shows the ship's sliding down vertically. The Covington had made 6 trips across the pond transporting 21,000 soldiers for the American Expeditionary Force. Covington was originally the German passenger liner Cincinnati of the Hamburg Line. In 1914 the vessel was interned in the US, and when War was declared it was seized by the US Navy. On July 2, 1918 she was torpedoed by U-86. The torpedo strike killed 6 of her crew. Her escorts rescued 770 crew and troops. There was an attempt to tow Covington to Brest, France; however, she sunk 50 miles off the French Coast. The ARA Covington Sinking Post Card is in fair condition and 105 years old.
