Godet & Sohn in Case with typical order ribbonMaker marked "JGUS" and "938" for firm of Godet, Berlin The Pour le Merite was the highest Prussian medal that was awarded to German soldiers until the end of the First World War in 1918.The Pour le Merite was made famous by German flying aces of WWI starting with Max Immelmann (from which the award received the nickname "Blue Max") and Oswald Boelcke both in 1916, not to mention the ace of aces Rittmeister Freiher Manfred von Richthofen "The Red Baron". Initial award of the Pour le Merite to an ace was around 10 aerial victories at the beginning of the war but progressed to 20 by the time of Richthofen's award and even to 28-30 by war's end!The Pour le Merite has undamaged glass enamel on both sides. The imperial eagles are very detailed, a really beautiful work by the jeweler Godet from Berlin. In the pie-wedge, the Pour le Merite is hallmarked with an "JGUS 938" stamp for maker and silver content. The ribbon loop is also stamped 938 silver and gold plated.The Miniature is also marked with "J. Godet & Sohn Berlin" on button made for civilian wear.
