It is camouflaged and has both the Army and Division markings on it. Curiously, it has both the markings for the 1st Army and the 2nd Army. These were originally produced in Britain and eventually manufactured in the US. The British have split butterfly rivet heads and the US have round head rivets. Also, the band surrounding the brim overlaps on the British helmet and touches end-to-end on the American ones. The Americans arrived with their Campaign hats and soon discovered they needed something more for protection so they contracted with the British to get Brodie hats. Later when US production sped up, they produced their own, the M1917 helmet. This helmet is the British pattern made for the US. This is an interesting theater-made trench art helmet. Overall, this helmet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. The exterior has been painted with camouflage that appears to be original to the time period. There are light dents, dings and scattered oxidation where the paint has worn off. There are light handling marks and scuffs throughout. At some point the helmet had "sand" added to the brim, the camo covers it. It does NOT appear to be from oxidation or erosion. The insignia markings mostly remain with some of edges of the lettering worn off. The red diamond on the right side has started to fade. The metal band around the brim edge has some dents, dings and finish loss along the edge, but it is securely attached to the helmet. The inside has scrapes, draglines, but most of the original finish still remains. The two rivet heads are securely fastened to the brim. They rotate freely and maintain their original shape. The painted exterior is marked with both the 1st Army and 2nd Army insignias, plus the 5 Division. The interior is stamp marked "M/0247" which is the "J&J Maxfield & Sons Ltd, Sheffield" manufacturer. They made helmets from 1916-1918. The liner is in Good condition, considering its age. The leather is starting to dry out and borderline brittle. It is securely attached to the helmet and there are no rips or tears but there are some light creases. The padded liner attached to the inside top is intact with no rips or tears. The rivet has started to oxidize. There is instructions attached to it, otherwise no other markings. The chinstrap is in good condition, considering its age. There are no rips or tears but there are some light creases and the leather has started to dry out. Some of the finish has started to come off. The buckle has started to oxidize. There are no markings. This Brodie helmet will be a great addition to your WWI British / American helmet collection, or a helmet collection in general.
