Description: WW2 1942 Dated Custom Trench Art Dagger-style Letter Opener Royal Canadian Navy There is an enameled military emblem attached at the end of the handle which has a crown, anchor and "R.C.N." We think this refers to Royal Canadian Navy.Just over 11.5" long.Hand guard is sandwiched between two spacers that look like they were cut from something resembling an engine belt.Mostly brass and/or bronze metals, some copper.Personalized - Engraved in cursive on the blade's first side is "To Elliott From Irwin"Engraved in cursive on the blade's second side is "Happy Birthday Halifax 11/10/42"An arsenal headstamping is barely visible on the end "R" "A" and "41".The blade edges are not sharp, so this is not a knife and is more of a dagger-style letter opener. Halifax Nova Scotia Canada was a major port in supplying material and equipment across the Atlantic Ocean to England. Canada officially declared war on Germany in 1939. Interestingly, at different times during the war the Royal Navy, US Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy had responsibility for protection of the port and North Atlantic Ocean. This item ended up in Southern California. It could have been made or even brought down here by any serviceman of the three navies, but it has an R.C.N. emblem on the hilt which implies a Canadian unless an American passing through there obtained an emblem to use. Used, as-is. Metal has an oxidation patina, scratches, wear, slight bend. Enameled military emblem has wear and damage. See attached pictures. AR04
