Description: This WW1 Imperial German S98 M1898 n/A Extra-Seitengewehr Quillback Dress Bayonet is in good condition overall but does show expected signs of age, service and storage. Like many private purchase pieces, there is no maker indicated on this blade however construction appears to be similar to Pre and immediate Post WW1 produced examples. The blade has not been sharpened and retains a strong amount of what appears to be a nickel plated finish, however there are clear areas of finish loss present. Mild finish wear can be noted on the other metal surfaces and all are commensurate with age. The wooden grips are in good condition and no obvious cracks or other damage can be detected. Both grip screws turn freely and the grip panels are easily removed. The tang of this bayonet retains a slot for the cleaning rod and a hole is present in the mortise slot of this purpose. Often times dress bayonets do not have this slot cut in their tang or a mortise slot at all. Of particular interest, a serial number can be seen on both the tang and on one of the internal flat sides of the mortise press stud.
