This books excels as a technical survey of warship trends in the 1906-1945 period. The work starts with a 7-page introduction, by well known naval historian D.K. Brown, who also serves as editor, that summarizes major trends in engineering, gunnery, weapons, and ship types. The articles are written by a team of 11-contributors with appropriate background to include the well known Norman Friedmann. There are 14 chapters, each covering a ship type or technical topic; Battleship and Battlecruisers, Aircraft Carriers, Cruisers, Coastal Vessels, Destroyers and Torpedo Boats, Submarines, Mine Warfare and Escort Vessels, Amphibious Warfare Vessels, Auxiliary Warships, Fleet Train, Naval Weapons, Electronics, Camouflage and Deception. There are numerous photographs, drawings, and comparative data tables. I recommend this, and the rest of the series, to anyone with a more than casual interest in naval topics. The writing hits the key points without getting too technical, but does assume some knowledge of ships. Overall this is an excellent survey work that packs an enormous amount of information into just over 200 pages. It is a gem and I highly recommend it to both casual and serious readers on warship development from 1906-45.
