Description: ----------------------------------------------------------------PLEASE VIEW ALL PHOTOS and READ ENTIRE LISTING 2nd to last photo is an actual Advert for My Wife's SD and the last photo shows the Fred Fear factory in Brooklyn (FYI purposes only)---------------------------------------------------------------- WOW! Estate GENUINE Antique 1900-1920 -- A rare find!!! "MY WIFE'S SALAD DRESSING" of Chicago BOTTLEAn early 20th Century product of Fred Fear Enterprises MY WIFE’S SALAD DRESSING Clear with faint lavender tinge Antique glass “My Wife’s Salad Dressing” embossed rectangular bottle with a twisted fluted neck. This was a common salad dressing and sauce bottle shape from the first quarter of the 20th century. My Wife's was a product made by the Fred Fear Company back in the day (see more info below). The "swirled" neck type bottle, as shown in the 1910-1920 advertisement (2nd to last pic) was manufactured by both mouth-blown and machine-made methods and seems to have been made from about 1900 into the mid-1920s. This was mouth-blown in a cup-bottom mold, has a tooled straight finish, and almost certainly has evidence of mold air venting, including bubbles in the glass. It has a slight amethyst tint, indicating that the glass was de-colorized with manganese, a common practice on bottles made between about 1890 and 1920 (Info thanks to Bill Lindsey, Society for Historical Archaeology). Embossed in fancier serif type letters with "MY WIFE'S / SALAD DRESSING," a heart flourish below "MY WIFE’S" and embossed at the bottom with "CHICAGO." The plain side was for the paper label that was once glued on. See the advertisement, 2nd to last photo (not included in this listing, just for FYI purposes) that shows the original label! The advert is one of the best-oddest ever! Salad Dressing and Scrubbing Household Soap at the same time! appx shy of 8” x 2” x 2.25” ABOUT "My Wife's Salad Dressing!!" ----“My Wife’s” was a marketing ploy by Fred Fear Enterprises, a company out of Chicago and NYC. Whether it was based on Fred’s actual wife’s recipe, or just a homey name to evoke “home-cooked” foods, it certainly was a popular item in the first quarter of the 20th Century. ——Fred Fear & Company was, at one time, the largest seller of a most eclectic group of commodities in the USA: pure Maple Syrup from their plant in St. Johnsbury, VT -- Clam Juice made in their Lewes, DE plant -- Salad Dressing and other condiments in their Chicago facility -- household cleaning supplies and Holiday themed paper merchandise from Christmas décor labels and gift wrap, to Easter egg colors and Valentine stickers in their Brooklyn operation. Headquartered at 15 Jay Street in Manhattan, NY, Fred Fear made one of the most iconic glass container collectibles today: The figural Pig bank bottle, with a slotted lid for coins, in which the Fear-owned New England Syrup Company packaged their syrup.----Founded in 1892, the company was acquired by the Childs Restaurant Company In 1954, which also included the acquisition of Louis Sherry Co. makers of candy and ice cream. —--The last photo is the only know photograph of the Fred Fear Company in Brooklyn circa 1933. They were located near the Brooklyn Navy Yard.---- 15 Jay today still stands, now a 5-loft condominium conversion in West Tribeca, on the same cobblestone street back in Fred Fear's day.
