Description: This 2 volume set is the 1st edition from this publisher in 1802. It is complete with the original engraving of Franklin done specifically for this publisher in 1801. Volume 1 has a detached front board. Volume 2's front board is tender but holding. The rest of the boards have general scuffing to all edges but are essentially solid and clean. The spines, too, are scuffed with one volume having a 1/2 inch chip from its head. They are not flaking or rotting. These were sold by J. Hatchard. Hatchard's is London’s oldest bookshop, having been established in 1797 by John Hatchard, publisher and anti-slavery campaigner. Hatchard's has been a landmark on one of the finest and most famous streets in the world, Piccadilly occupying Number 187. Hatchard's has a long and proud association with the royal family; Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III was one of their first customers. A scarce set in decent condition.
