Artist bio: William Partridge Burpee (1846-1940) was an American Impressionist painter who hailed from Maine and is one of seven artists often referred to as the “Lynn Beach Painters.” From the early 1880s to the mid-1890s, he was in Massachusetts, painting genre scenes that were reflective of everyday life on the shores of Lynn Beach. Burpee’s work was also publicly displayed during this time as he was a frequent exhibitor at both the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics Association, and the Boston Art Club. While touring Europe in 1899, his style grew increasingly impressionistic and marked the beginning of his work with pastels. It was a medium he favored very much and became quite adept at using, as well as one which earned him a bronze medal at the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. Works by William Partridge Burpee reside in the permanent collections of several prominent U.S. museums and are also represented by prestigious galleries specializing in American art.
