Description: So-called dollar HK-832, Whipple dollar. The piece is 38mm dia., and is gold gilt bronze. It is generally accepted to have been struck in the 1890's. The obverse shows the design very much like the Morgan dollar reverse. Around the border of the upper half is C.M. Whipple & Co., West Field, Mass. Above the eagle is "Legal Tender" and at the bottom of the coin is "One Dollar". C.M. Whipple & Co. seems to have been makers of whips. The reverse is the incuse of the obverse, with the lettering also backwards. The light in the photos tricks the eye and makes it difficult to see that the reverse design is in fact recessed into the coin. The HK reference indicates rare.
