PLAY CAST CO-SIGNED BY: ROBERT ALDA, STEVE LAWRENCE, SALLY ANN HOWES and BERNICE MASSI The performers sign a Playbill for a January 1964 performance of What Makes Sammy Run? What Makes Sammy Run? ran at the 54th Street Theatre on Broadway from February 27, 1964 until July 12, 1965. Based on the novel by Budd Schulberg, the show was produced by Joseph Cates and directed by Abe Burrows. Robert Alda played Al Manhaim, Sally Ann Howes played Kit Sargent, Bernice Massi played Laurett Harrington and Steve Lawrence played Sammy Glick. Actor ROBERT ALDA (1914-1986) began his show business career in vaudeville and later appeared in burlesque as a tenor and straight man. By 1934, he was well a well-known radio star. Alda starred as George Gershwin in his first film (Rhapsody in Blue, 1945), but played villains and character roles most of his career. He won a Tony Award for creating the role of Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls (1950). Robert, the father of actor Alan Alda, appeared with his son in two episodes of TV's M*A*S*H. Singer and actor STEVE LAWRENCE, born in 1935, who began recording when he was 16 years of age, had a No. 1 hit in 1963 with "Go Away, Little Girl" and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1964 for his performance in What Makes Sammy Run? His television credits include two of his own series, The Steve Lawrence-Eydie Gorm Show (1958) and The Steve Lawrence Show (1965), frequent performances in skits on The Carol Burnett Show, guest hosting The Tonight Show (1962) and guest appearances on TV variety shows, games shows and series. Lawrence has also been seen in several feature films, including The Blues Brothers (1980), The Blues Brothers 2000 (1998) and Ocean's 11 (2001). He has been married to singer Eydie Gorm since December 29, 1957. The couple, who met while Steve was a regular on Steve Allen's Tonight! show, has appeared together in nightclubs and on television. SALLY ANN HOWES, born in London, England in 1930, grew up in a show business family and made her first movie with a starring role in Tuesday's Child (1943) when she was only 13 years old. She hadmemorable roles early in her career in Dead of Night (1945), Nicholas Nickleby (1947), Anna Karenina (1948) and as Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). Howes got her start on the stage in the West End in 1950, with a role in Caprice. This led to many appearances on the London and American stage. Howes replaced Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway production of My Fair Lady (1956-1962, 2,717 performances) in 1958 so that Andrews could join the London cast of the play. She also earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Fiona MacLaren in Brigadoon (1963). Actress BERNICE MASSI was born on August 23, 1933 in Camden, New Jersey.
