Description: Korean War-Era West Point U.S.M.A. Summer "India" WHITE COTTON (not Vinyl!) VISOR CAP, with a true BULLION CHIN STRAP, with a spit-shined" LEATHER VISOR. SCARCE! SCARCE! SCARCE! Corps of Cadets. United States Military Academy. This "COTTON top" is an OLD one!!! Long since replaced by VINYL (along with a new set of 'sensibilities' at the Service Academies!). This Service Visor Cap is marked on the SILK LINING of the underside of the Crown, "59 / Cadet Q.M. Dept. / U.S.M.A." as well as with the manufacturer's logos and name, "Art Caps /New York." The White SILK LINING is covered by clear plastic with a window for the Cadet's NAME CARD. The plastic is still clear, free of 'yellowing' and cracks. - The Cap consists of a WICKER FRAME and a removable WHITE COTTON COVER (that was regularly laundered and starched). - The true GOLD BULLION CHIN STRAP is the earlier "narrow 1/2 inch width model. - The two proportionally small GILT CHIN STRAP BUTTONS read "CADET / U.S.M.A." surrounding the Academy Crest/Insigne. - The "spit-shined" Black LEATHER VISOR is in ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL condition! - The WHITE SILK BOW is still attached to the rear seam of the perforated RUSSET LEATHER SWEATBAND. - The Academy's Gilt BRASS CREST is the taller 2 1/2" model is present along with its original Brass SPINNER. - The Cap has its original tubular Crown STIFFENER. ****This White Service Cap with the COTTON COVER was tossed into the air following a Graduation Ceremony one warm June afternoon by a newly commissioned Officer in the 1950s! The hat toss, which has become the archetypal image depicting the West Point graduation, is an interesting part of the ceremony. It dates back to the period immediately following World War II. While the first class graduated in 1802, the first documented "hat toss" took place in 1946, according to the Army.
