Description: Maker and marks: On the lower side of this striking black basalt figurine are the word Wedgwood and the phrase Made in England. The letter F, the number 81 and a copyright symbol also appear. Design: In 1768 Josiah Wedgwood created the very fine black unglazed stoneware called Wedgwood Black Basalt. It gives a lustrous and smooth matte finish to this wonderful figurine of an English miner holding a pickaxe. Designed by Colin Melbourne in 1980, it's called the Miner, part of the series Skills of the Nation. Missing base: Other figurines in the series rest on a platform base and this one probably did too. But the base was not found at the estate sale where this figurine was purchased so it is not included in this listing. The figurine's bottom is flat and it stands properly despite the lack of the base. Size: The figurine is 8 inches tall, 3 inches wide and 4 3/8 inches long at the bottom. It weighs 15.4 ounces. Condition: It's in excellent condition with no marks, nicks, chips, cracks, stains, discoloration, repairs, crazing or wear. Although it has been lightly washed, it would benefit from a more thorough cleaning. Some of the photos have been lightened to show detail so many tiny flecks of dust seem more obvious than they actually are. Please check all the photos very carefully – they are an important part of the description.
