Webster's Common School Dictionary, antique reference book (1867)

Description: This is an 1867 hardcover printing of "A Common School Dictionary of the English Language," which the title page describes as having been "mainly abridged from the latest edition of the American Dictionary of Noah Webster," written by William G. and William A. Webster, and published by Ivison, Blakeman & Company. A small volume, this book measures approximately 4 3/4" wide and 6 3/8" high and contains nearly 400 pages. Besides word definitions & pronunciations, this volume contains special sections regarding rules for spelling, words spelled in multiple ways, proper names, geographical names, biographical names, abbreviations, arbitrary signs, foreign words & phrases incorporated into English, and illustrations of various categories of things. The copy being offered is in well-worn condition overall and still makes a good reading copy while also doubling as a great display piece for a Victorian-themed room. As you can see in my first seven photos, the covers are heavily worn, with prominent edge rubbing & chipping, some chipped-away portions of the spine, fraying and rounding (with layering) in all corners and at the top & bottom of the spine, many stains, and heavy surface rubbing. Inside, the pages have darkened considerably with age, have lost some of their crispness (especially along the edges, where small tears occur on some pages), and are still fully bound. However, the binding is stiff and rather weak, and there is splitting between the cover and the first page (shown in my 8th photo). Also, almost every page has a lot of brown stains, and several pages have marking from a pencil. All pages have an old paper smell, which resembles slightly burned paper and is beloved by fans of Victorian paper items.
