Very Interesting read!Reviews"The text is brilliantly lucid, like Mr. Pike's own watercolours. It is difficult to imagine a more helpful guide." - William F. Buckley, National ReviewInstruction by the master!! ... A guide to watercolor painting by a master of the art. The illustrations of paintings by John Pike are simply breathtaking!A comprehensive guide .... This is one of the most comprehensive books you can read on the subject of watercolor painting. Learning and using the techniques described by John Pike will lean an artist to greater success with watercolor as a painting medium. Watercolor painting is often described as the most difficult painting medium. John Pike's techniques work, with the addition of lots of practice.A GREAT REFERENCE!! ... For anyone seriously interested in learning about or painting with transparent watercolor this is a book that should be in your reference library. John Pike was an absolute master of the medium. He goes into great detail about materials and basic principles of watercolor. He discusses tools and techniques. There is a priceless section on pigments and the way they react to paper and in a painting. Values are discussed illustrating their importance in planning. Design principles are covered. Step by step demonstrations are provided that make the process easier to understand. No matter what direction your creativity takes you, I feel it is vital to have a solid foundation in the basics, and John Pike does that. Once you understand the limitations and endless capabilities of transparent watercolor as presented by Pike you will be able to experiment wisely in your own way. From these basic principles you are free to explore other ways to introduce pigment to paper. It makes no difference if your interests are representational works or abstract. You still must understand the basics! Many of the fine illustrations at the beginning of this Dover publication are black and white to demonstrate techniques. That is followed with full color examples that can be intimidating for beginners. Don't be! Just remember, we are all different. We see and create differently...different, not wrong! Pick up a brush, dip it into water and pigment then put it on paper, but do it your own way. Experiment. Have fun. Be patient with yourself and you will learn to love watercolor. OUTSTANDING BOOK ...
