Description: VTG Rowantrees Blue/Green Open Sugar and Creamer from Blue Hills Made in Maine Sugar bowl is 2 1/4 inches high, and top diameter is 2 1/2 inch. Creamer is 3 inches tall Both Pieces are clearly marked on the bottom as can be seen in the photograph. The Pottery is Handmade by Village Craftsmen from the Clay of Blue Hill. The potters shape the clay on the wheel, since molds are not allowed in Blue Hill. The equally skillful craftsmen apply the unique Rowentrees glazes to vases, mugs, plates, bowls, pitchers, etc..Although an old sign still marks the small pottery studio's presence, Rowantrees Pottery in Blue Hill, Maine ceased production in 2009 after 75 years. Adelaide Pearson, a Blue Hill resident who traveled the world and gave art lessons at her home, built a kiln on her land in 1934, and with her partner, Laura Paddock, built a pottery studio with the hope of employing neighbors and other locals, and improving their lives. Important as this was, they succeeded at more than this. Rowantrees gained world renown for its beautiful, high quality, utilitarian pieces. The third owner, Sheila Varnum, closed the studio in 2009 due to health reasons. An interesting note, Blue Hill is on the coast of Maine, and Laura Paddock used minerals gathered on the peninsula to create the studio's beautiful glaze colors.
