Description: Exquisite one of a kind, vintage folk art mosaic Mayan Death Mask, hand crafted in Mexico. The mask is mounted on a rectangular onyx base and measures 6 1/2" tall, 4 1/2" wide and is 2 1/2" from front to back. Beautiful different stones and shells in warm earth tones were carved and sanded to create the piece that fits together seamlessly. The surface was then covered in a clear epoxy resin finish. The stones used include; Quartz, Apricot Agate, Citrine Agate, Red Tiger's Eye, Abalone Shell and Orange Carnelian Agate. The back of the mask is natural grey clay with some epoxy on it from the front being coated. The masks were a long standing tradition used by the Mayans to honor their dead and people of importance. They used them as an actual mask for the deceased, for ceremonies, in battles or to adorn their homes. Since each piece is handmade, no 2 are alike and each is a unique piece of art. The mask is in perfect condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. The bottom of the base does show shelf wear or where felt may have been removed..
