ABOUT: This book is about a Southern California Indian family who lived on the Santa Ysabel Reservation in San Diego County during the mid-1930s. Most of the characters in the book are imaginary, but are based on real persons I met and worked with while teaching school on the reservation for four years. Names used are fictitious; however, some of the people mentioned by Ramona La Chappa and Pablo Osuna were authentic persons whose names are recorded in California history. Although the stories in this book are fictional, some are based on true events that occurred both on and off the reservation. A case in point is the Volcan Valley. It has been greatly enlarged in size in the stories for emphasis, as it is the setting for the main characters of the book. A valley exists in that location, but is known by another name. Also, I have named the mountains east of the valley the Volcan Mountains. As one examines the map, other minor changes can be noted in names of the physical features of the area.
