Description: I'm pleased to offer this specimen of Microcline (variety: Amazonite) from Morsvikbotn, Nordland, Norway. The specimen measures 3.85 x 2.30 x 1.80 inches or 9.77 x 5.83 x 4.57cm. This is from the Roland Schmidt (1941-) collection of Littleton, Colorado. Mr. Schmidt worked as Director of the Mineralogical Laboratories for Hazen Research of Golden, Colorado. I recently obtained about 150 pieces from his eclectic collection and this piece is accompanied by his signature label and shallow specimen tray. The label gives the locality as Morsvikbotn and there is a noted pegmatite about 10-12 miles southwest of Morsvikbotn that is rather well known in Norway for its amazonite specimens. This is the Tennvatn pegmatite and may be the actual source of this specimen. I can find no reference to any mineral occurrences at Morsvikbotn and the Schmidt label may have used the placename as the nearest settlement--I really don't know to be certain. This is a large, lustrous and very colorful pure cleavage of this popular variety of microcline. Microcline is a potassium aluminum silicate and a member of the Feldspar Group of minerals. When showing this particular color these are popularly known as amazonite. The wonderful coloration is usually attributed to trace lead (Pb) in the structure but Fe+2 is also believed by some to be a contributing chromophore in at least some amazonite from various localities.
