Vintage Stanley No. 21 Combination Square, Made in U.S.A., Pat. 1984951

Description: This Stanley No. 21 combination square is an early model but not the earliest. The numbers on the rule are the more ornate variety and the head does not feature a scribe like the later models do. The surfaces of the head are smooth rather than having the waffle pattern. The knurled nut on the lock screw is steel rather than brass. I'm not an expert on these squares but I think this combination of features probably means this tool was manufactured in the late 1930s or early 1940s. If it were produced after WWII, I'm fairly certain the knurled nut would be brass. If you're a serious collector, you probably know. The good: Both the head and the rule are in surprisingly nice shape and are rust free. Some of the black paint on the head has worn away, which is not surprising for a tool as old as this one is. The knurled nut and lock screw have good undamaged threads and the knurling on the nut is in excellent shape. The locking mechanism works exactly as it should. In terms of its function purely as a square, this tool works very well. The bad: The vial is loose in its mount so the accuracy of the level cannot be relied upon unless/until that is fixed. If you would be buying this square as a display or show piece perhaps that detail doesn't matter to you but, if you intend to actually use this tool, the accuracy of the level may be an important consideration and this particular tool may or may not be a good choice depending on whether or not you know how to reset the vial. I would have reset the vial myself before offering this tool for sale if I knew how to do it but I do not know how to remove the plug that holds the vial in place and I did not want to risk breaking the vial while learning on a square that's in as nice condition as this one is, so I will leave that task for someone who's familiar with the process.
