Description: A fine example of a Spofford Pat. Fray & Pigg Brace. A short history lesson. John S Fray began manufacturing his "Spofford Patent" braces sometime around 1859 with his partner Horrace Pigg. By 1866 Pigg had left the company and the manufacturer stamping only listed Fray. So this brace is from between 1859 and 1866, making it a true antique. Fray's braces are still used by hand tool woodworker and collected by enthusiasts because of their simple design. You'll break your arm before you snap this hunk of steel in a hole. The robust handle provides a good place to hold, and the simple square chuck design holds square shank augers or bits without allowing an roll-over or movement. They are also being collected by preppers who will need to drill a hole after there's no more electricity. Everything works as it should, and the pad rotates freely.
