Description: This is a Sony Store Sign. It is two-sided, designed to hang over the sidewalkto be visible to shoppers passing in both directions. The sign measures about 32" wide and 20" tall, and would hang by chains passing through the two brass grommets on the top of the sign. The "Sony Boy" character had been in use by Totsuko since September 1956 to promote their Tapecorder and Transistor Radio product lines. The uppercase SONY Logo began to be used in 1957. The company name was changed to SONY in January 1958. This version of the sign uses a large serif font very similar to the SONY Logo in use during 1961. The upper Japanese phrase on the sign is self-referential, and translates to: "Global Marks Born in Japan". The Sony Boy and the SONY Logo are the "Global Marks", exported from Japan to a Global, International Marketplace. The lower Japanese phrase translates to "SONY Federation Store", indicating that the store is an authorized SONY Dealer. Noria Ohga became Manager of Sony's newly created Design Office in 1961, in charge of advertising and standardized design across all product lines. He regarded Sony Boy as unsuitable as the face of the International Sony Corporation, and he called for the elimination of Sony Boy from all Sony advertising and publications. So this sign would not have originated from later than 1961! In spite of Olga's disapproval, this Sign would be a great addition to your Sony Collection! You could hang it in your display room, and bring it with you to show to other exhibitors at collector's meetings you may attend! The sign is securely packaged between two layers of pegboard held together with 1/4" screws,and padded by multiple layers of bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard. You will need a Philips Screw Driver and a Pliers or small Wrench to disassemble the protective pegboard packaging.
