Description: Beautifully designed and handcrafted by skilled Chinese bamboo-weaving artisans in the 1970s, these whimsical wicker turtle figures bring a sense of fun and charm. Each turtle’s shell is a removable lid, allowing the body to function as a small storage container. Wicker turtle designs were particularly popular in Japan. History of Wicker Bamboo Animals: •The wicker animal tradition began in 1966, created by bamboo weaving master Yu Zhang Gen in Shengxian County, Zhejiang, China. •Woven bamboo animals represent a complex art form, requiring skilled craftsmanship in design, mold-making, weaving, assembly, and the application of paint and varnish. •The Shengxian Bamboo Weaving Factory pioneered wicker animal production, later inspiring other bamboo weaving factories across China to join in. •Initially, wicker animals were exported by Shanghai Handicrafts and later by the Zhejiang Handicrafts Import-Export Corporation, as factories lacked direct export rights. Shanghai and Zhejiang Handicrafts managed exports from various factories, so the designs were not always tied to a single factory. •The wicker turtle designs were created and produced by the Shengxian Artistic Weaving Factory.
