Crocks make excellent gifts for any occasion and continue to become rare and are found being passed on as family heirlooms from generation to generation. Red Wing crocks make a wonderful addition to your home décor and larger ones make great end tables when outfitted with a rustic wooden or cut-glass top. They can be used as stand-alone or considered for floral arrangements as well as dried arrangements. This is the first version of the Red Wing logo and appears more orange in color and was manufactured between 1906 and 1930. As time progressed from 1906 the size of the wing was reduced from 6” to 4" and finally 2". After 142 years in business, the iconic Red Wing Stoneware pottery company closed its doors in September of 2019. The company cited low-cost competitors as a reason for ceasing manufacturing and sales. Red Wing crocks was started in Red Wing Minnesota in 1861 by Paul Rand. While the company has operated under several names, Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery was originally established in 1877. The name was changed again in 1906 to Red Wing Union Stoneware Co. at which time the red wing trademark was adopted. The company continued with this name until 1936 when the name was changed for the last time to Red Wing Potteries. These vintage glazed, hand-thrown, kiln-fired crocks were used prior to the introduction of refrigeration. American households used them to hold food such as butter, salted meat, and pickled vegetables. These stoneware crocks were durable, economical, and watertight even without the glaze.
