Description: This is a vintage silver plated tea strainer. It likely predates 1917 because it is stamped as "Patent Pending" instead of "Patent 1917" which other examples contain. Has the silver plate handle with Sheffield and P&B enclosed in three hearts on the handle. When placed upside down, it looks like a turtle shell. See below for comprehensive history of the item. It's condition is excellent, no dents and the screen is intact. Keep in mind I do not evaluate vintage silver plate for a living so see photos for best description. Below is a description I found from a collector: This silver plated strainer spoon is about 4-1/2 inches long. Stamped on bottom is Patent 1917, P & B (enclosed in three hearts). Inside is an enclosed screen which was obviously used to strain any liquid passing through the funneled area of the spoon and into the mouth. The inventor of this spoon was H.E. Nock. From the Nock patent application: “My invention is an improved tea- and coffee-strainer for domestic use. The object of my improvement is to provide a dripless strainer of ornamental design and simple construction, easy and convenient to manipulate and adapt to prevent the contents from dripping when it is set down on the table at intervals in its use. A further object of my improvement is to provide for convenient removal of the screen from the strainer for cleansing, and for easy replacement thereof.”Paye & Baker Manufacturing Co., which was founded in Attleboro, Massachusetts, in 1901 by Charles T.
