Description: Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) is a well-listed German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was known for using dark, rich colors and rough treatment of forms. He employed a heavy and forceful dynamic style which vibrates with vitality. Like Van Gogh, he employed heavily laden brushstrokes applied in layered planes of contrasting, saturated hues. His colors were not true to nature but to his own vision of how things should appear. He was the leading exponent of German Expressionism in the 20's and 30's. His work was labled as "degenerate" by the Nazi regime and he was severely persecuted by the Nazis who removed most of his paintings from galleries or from public and private collections. After the work, he lived in East Berlin until the end of his life. The artwork for sale is an original German Expressionist gouache painting, probably from the 1930's or early 40's. The image is a colorful urban scene featuring a view of a 2-story home. The piece measures 18" high and 24" across. The primary colors are green, brown, blue, red and yellow. There are 2 repaired tears in the painting at the mid far right (photos 17 & 18) but they look fine. There is no paperwork to help authenticate this painting so it is being sold as attributed to Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. The signature "S. Rottluff" (photo 2) can be found at the lower right.
