From what we have found out we believe this to be a sod axe, also called peat axe, turf axe or bog axe. Used to cut peat from bogs for fuel or to cut sod. It appears as though this has had little or no use. The blade measures 6 1/4" x 8 5/8" and the beveled edge goes from the cutting edge all the way around the top edge.
