Steven Stipelman Professionally, my career goes back nearly 50 years. My first job was staff illustrator for Henri Bendel, one of the most fashion forward stores of the period. I drew all the newspaper ads. My next job, and perhaps the one I am most associated with was an illustrator for Women’s Wear Daily and “W” for more than 25 years. I illustrated major American and European collections- designer to couture. I worked with these designers often sketching the garments before they were ever made. I learned a great deal of how collections were created as well as construction and fabrication. I was extremely blessed to have had exposure to these incredible pieces of clothing. I constantly bring all of my background in my classes. My work was printed internationally and some of my clients included- Bergdorf Goodman, Lord and Taylor, Marshall Field, Estee Lauder, Orlane, Yves St.Laurent cosmetics, Bill Blass, Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, Valentino, Tuleh and Ralph Rucci I began collecting designer and couture garments in the early 1970’s. My first purchase was a Galanos that I bought at Bonwit Teller ( rather than going on vacation) after meeting him and sketching his collection for Women’s Wear Daily. For the next 2 decades my collection grew. I have donated many garments to costume collections at colleges and universities. I have lent garments for exhibitions and have had articles written about my collecting.
