Ernie drove the Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet #56 Monte Carlo in his first year as a Winston Cup driver. He only qualified for 5 of the 29 races with 1 top 10 finish. Three of the races were sponsored by Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet, and the other 2 races were sponsored by U.S. Racing. Oddly, the #56 was displayed on the car in only 2 of the 5 starts that year, a black and white #56 on Sunday 13th of September, in the Wrangler Jeans Indigo 400 at Richmond, and a silver #56 on Sunday October 11th, in the Oakwood Homes 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It was a #6 Monte Carlo in the other 3 races. This listing is for the car that ran in the Oakwood Homes 500.
