Description: This is a stirring and expressive pair of Vintage Modern Figural Expressionist Woman Portrait Lithographs on Paper (2), by renowned Moroccan born French - Israeli Modernist painter and printmaker, Guillaume Azoulay (b. 1949.) These artworks are titled: "Sinistra" and "Desta," and are from the artist's 1973 Les Cariatides series. These pieces depict the expressive figurative portraits of two unclothed women, contorting their bodies in unusual poses, rendered in gold with a meticulous line-drawing abstracted manner, which is Azoulay's notable artistic style. The portraits stand in stark refinement against a jet-black background and are framed with black mattings and ornate gold frames. The artwork on the left is numbered and titled: "186/230. Sinistra" in the lower left corner and signed: "Guillaume Azoulay" in the lower right corner. The artwork on the right is numbered and titled: "186/230. Desta" in the lower left corner and signed: "Guillaume Azoulay" in the lower right corner. Each piece is approximately 25 7/8 x 28 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual visible artworks are approximately 15 1/4 x 18 inches. Very good condition for age and storage, with some light speckles of soiling (on the reverse side of the glass, not the print) visible on the framed Sinistra lithograph. Priced to Sell. I am selling two of these vintage Azoulay lithographs for less than the price that one of them retails for in a gallery setting. Acquired in Los Angeles County, California. In this short time span, Azoulay has worked to establish himself as an American etcher. In 1983, Azoulay was chosen to create the official Kentucky Derby Festival Poster. His parents settled in Paris when Azoulay was ten and by the age of thirteen, he was sketching and selling his drawings on the streets and planning his career as an artist. As Azoulay met people from various parts of the world, his interest in traveling grew and when he was fourteen he left home and hitchhiked across Europe and the Middle East. His desire to see and be part of the life, history and beauty of the world took him from Copenhagen to Rome, from Lisbon to Jerusalem. Azoulay made the world his university, people were his main subject with their joys and pains and ways of life. Guillaume became fluent in five languages.Eventually, Azoulay settled in Israel in 1967 where he applied to Betzalel, the Middle East's most famous art academy. They rejected his application but this did not deter Azoulay from continuing his studies. Azoulay studied drama and graduated as an actor. Azoulay appeared in the Israeli production of the rock musical Hair as well as other shows on the Israeli stage. Unable to share his time fully between the theater and painting, Azoulay chose the expression of visual art. After moving several times Azoulay settled in California in March of 1976 where he now lives with his family. Azoulay's wife is Charmaine Seal, a noted ballerina, yet another one of Azoulay's favorite subjects in his artwork. They have two sons Lawrence and Arnoud, and daughter Ondine who is the subject of an etching that is part of the collection of the Bibliotheque National Du Louvre in Paris. The brilliance of Azoulay's art centers on his ability to convey the purity of line to create strong illusions of fluid motion and life. Line is the key element of design in Azoulay's artwork. It is through his organic line that Azoulay creates balance, harmony, contrast, and the illusion of depth and movement in each one of his compositions. It is through his lines that Azoulay creates balance, harmony, contrast, and the illusion of depth and movement in each one of his compositions. Guillaume Azoulay is self-taught, imminently and eminently motivated. His art, far from quotidian, transcends the faddish and the pretentious. His style is so unique that it is instantly recognized, unmistakably so. The variety of approaches he conceives makes his journey distinct. Horses, dancers and figures are treated as graphic landscapes. Hooves, heads, manes, limbs, are so many hills and valleys. Shaded glades are evoked by the manipulation of parallel lines theatrically meandering, running close at times then separating to mimic the topography of some lost geography. His colors are the rainbow-like refraction of light after a downpour. They pick up the threads of his linear tale and weave them into a solid cloth. His portraits are obviously another cherished venue, exuding a compelling truth and yet so patently his in style and concept. Internationally appreciated and collected, his work adds an important dimension to any art collection. Accolades and decades of fame notwithstanding, Guillaume Azoulay still refers to himself as an "artisan.β
