The backs are soft white that show discoloration from age. There are cracks and chips on most of these trays as shown by example on these pictures. I did not take a picture of every flaw but know that every tray has a version of those. One photo shows an 8 1/2” paper plate in the plate area to show you can use them to insert on tray. One tray has marks from utensil use in the plate area. Because of the age, I would use these for fun and because they are bright and pretty but would consider using paper plates on them and other foods in packaging in the compartment. I figure that these are still fun useful pieces that could be used for many purposes still!
