The Menorah: A Symbol of LightIn Hebrew, the word menorah means “lamp.” The ancient menorah had seven branches—one for each day of Creation—and it burned in the Temple in what was then Judea, a small area caught in the middle of conflict between the Egyptian empire and the Greek-Assyrian empire. It was an everlasting light, an oil lamp that was never supposed to go out. Those two empires clashed in 167 B.C.E., and under the ruler Antiochus IV, Judea became Hellenized. Antiochus outlawed Judaism. The Jewish people were told they could not keep the Sabbath, they could not keep kosher, and the Temple was desecrated. A small group of people rebelled, and they became known as the Maccabees. Over several years, they were able to take back the Temple and relight the menorah. As the story goes, one day’s worth of oil miraculously lasted for eight days. That’s why the Hanukkah menorah has nine candles: one for each of the eight days, and one to light the rest. The Hanukkah menorah is more accurately called a hanukkiyah. A Hannukah menorah, or hanukkiah, is a nine-branched candelabrum lit during the eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Eight of the nine branches hold lights (candles or oil lamps) that symbolize the eight nights of the holiday; on each night, one more light is lit than the previous night, until on the final night all eight branches are ignited. The ninth branch holds a candle, called the shamash ("helper" or "servant"), which is used to light the other eight. The Hanukkah menorah commemorates, but is distinct from, the seven-branched menorah used in the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. Along with the seven-branched menorah and the Star of David, it is among the most widely produced articles of Jewish ceremonial art.What is Bronze?Bronze is a reddish-brown metal alloy in the “red metal” family made up of 88% copper, and 12% tin. It’s malleable (but harder than copper) so it’s easy to manufacture into different products and has low metal-to-metal friction. It also forms a natural protective layer (patina) on its surface that keeps it corrosion-resistant. Depending on what properties are needed, it’s sometimes mixed with other elements like phosphorus, silicone, or zinc. It’s made using the bronze casting process where it’s melted and mixed with whatever other elements needed, poured it into molds, and allowed to cool and harden.
