Description: Vintage Leeds & Northrup Kelvin Bridge 4286 Ohmmeter Precision Type in Oak Case. The oak measures 6 1/4" x 9 1/2" and 7 3/4" high; it weighs 8 pounds 8 ounces. The metal tag on the cover is marked manufacturer's no. 829-9 and order no. 35-2859P. Untested as it takes a large size battery, the battery compartment is clean with no corrosion. The top cover to the oak case is loose at the hinges but just needs to be screwed back in place, there is a small sliver of oak missing along one side. See the detailed photos. A Kelvin bridge, also called a Kelvin double bridge and in some countries a Thomson bridge, is a measuring instrument used to measure unknown electrical resistors below 1 ohm. It is specifically designed to measure resistors that are constructed as four terminal resistors. Historically Kelvin Bridges were used to measure shunt resistors for Ammeters and sub one ohm reference resistors in Metrology laboratories. In Scientific community the Kelvin Bridge paired with Null Detector was used to achieve highest precision and allow early detection of Superconductivity.
