Description: When chess emerged in Europe as the successor to the Indo-Persian-Arabic game of shatranj, chess masters wandered from the court of one royal or ducal patron to another, rather like troubadours. With the rise of a more cosmopolitan Europe, with a wealthier middle class, chess clubs, supported by businessmen, arose in cafes and chop houses. Local masters became the club professionals, often playing for cash stakes. Gradually national pride prompted matches between these masters, such as the Labourdonnais-MacDonnell matches, and the matches of Howard Staunton. For the Grand Exposition of the 1851, Staunton struck on a novel idea--a chess tournament, in which the top masters of Europe would compete. To everyone's surprise, Staunton did not win--that honor went to a German professor of mathematics, Adolf Anderssen. And thus a new sporting tradition--the chess tournament--came to be. Staunton, in later life a Shakespeare scholar, wrote a number of chess books. Elsewhere we have his book on London, 1851. He also wrote The Chess-Player's Handbook, which recently sold here on ebay for $408. This is a companion to the Handbook, and is a later edition from 1891. A bit of history that is worth every penny. English language, English Descriptive notation. Hardback allansbooks has no control over the customs duties of foreign lands.
