Description: This is a vintage Vietnam war in-country machine-embroidered patch, used condition. Size is 3" by 3.25". During Vietnam War, the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF) 524th Fighter Squadron, also known as the "Thien Loi" Squadron, was a fighter unit that operated out of Tan Son Nhut Air Base near Saigon. The 524th Fighter Squadron flew A-1H Skyraider aircraft, which were primarily used for close air support and ground attack missions in support of South Vietnamese ground forces. The squadron was composed of both Vietnamese and American pilots, who worked closely together to carry out their missions. One of the 524th Fighter Squadron's most notable missions was in support of the South Vietnamese defense of the city of Hue during the Tet Offensive in 1968. The squadron's pilots flew numerous sorties over the city, providing critical air support for ground forces engaged in heavy fighting against North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong troops.Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing stiff resistance from enemy forces, the pilots of the 524th Fighter Squadron carried out their missions with courage and determination, often flying in low-altitude and high-risk situations to provide effective air support for ground forces.
