Vienna Acoustics BACH speakers—Scan·Speak 1" dome tweeters—7" woofers

Description: Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintage Vienna Acoustics BACH two-way speakers, meticulously hand-crafted in Vienna, Austria, c.1999. The BACH feature 7” mid/bass woofers with triple poly-coated paper cones, built in-house, and 1” soft dome tweeters sourced from Denmark’s esteemed Scan·Speak. When new, BACH retailed for $1500 on the pair. Those superlative drivers are housed in attractive bass reflex cabinets constructed of thick, well-braced MDF covered in black-stained, urethane-coated real hardwood veneer, piano gloss-finished on the front and rear including the edge trim. The speakers measure a reasonable 33¾” tall by 7½” wide by 9¾” deep (not including grille and terminal protrusions) and blend effortlessly with just about any listening room décor. Vienna Acoustics was founded some 35 years ago and quickly gained notice by the audiophile community. Apart from their high-end components, it’s the construction details that set these fine speakers apart from their better-known competitors. For example, you won’t find many other speaker grilles that have real silk cloth and unbreakable metal mount pegs. Plus, they finished the input terminal plates in the same mirror gloss as the cabinets’ rears, to where the transition is barely perceptible, and used torx head screws for mounting the drivers, terminal plates, and even bass ports to the cabinets, which is not seen very often either. And, the bottoms have large chambers meant to be filled with sand to enhance cabinet stability and optimize the sound. Details matter and these speakers abound with them. So, please see my large photos, the Vienna Acoustics product overview and specs images, the 1999 AUDIO Magazine annual buyer's guide excerpt, and read my remaining description to decide if these outstanding Vienna Acoustics speakers should be yours. *And, please pardon the reflections and glare visible in some of my pictures. The speakers were very difficult to photograph, with their piano gloss finish panels and shiny woofer cones making straight-on shots a real challenge. This pair of Vienna Acoustics BACH is in clean, very good condition. There are no dents, dings, chips, or noteworthy scratches on the cabinets, just some light scuffs and marks primarily on the undersides, as pictured. Also, the grilles have no holes, frays, or runs to the cloth, just a few faint streaks at the bottom of one, and solid fiberboard frames with perfect metal mount pegs. And, both of the brass-tone metal “V” emblems are solidly affixed near the cabinets’ bottoms. These Vienna Acoustics speakers present exceptionally well at all distances. In addition, the woofers’ poly-coated cones and voice coil dustcaps are flawless and so are the tweeters’ domes. Plus, the woofers have permanent rubber surrounds that will last indefinitely, but have a few small white spots that butyl rubber can take on over the years. Most importantly, the BACH play strong and clear with fast, detailed midrange, sparkly 20kHz highs, and stout low-end response with the bass-ported enclosures. Plus, they present a nominal 6 ohm load and can be used with amplifiers rated up to 200 watts per channel, so it’s a definitely a sturdy platform. No doubt about it, these are the real deal! Plus, the heavy-duty, knurled binding post terminals can accommodate banana plugs, pins, as well as fairly large gauge bare cable ends. And, the speakers came with carpet spikes, but the first owner had hardwood floors and, as such, used adjustable hard rubber feet. The original carpet spikes are not available here, but the thread size is metric M6 if spikes are preferred. Lastly, I have emptied the ballast sand from the bottoms of the cabinets. Adding some 40 pounds to an already high shipping weight is not in anybody’s interest. If desired by the next owner, dry play sand should be bought, and I’ve read that some owners even use cat litter. Wet sand, i.e. from the beach, should not be used unless it has been thoroughly dried. In case the buyer is local and drives over to get the speakers, I’ve saved the sand and will pass it along! As pictured and described, this splendid pair of Vienna Acoustics BACH speakers is offered at a competitive price.
