Description: Collectible small portrait in wooden gilded frame - most likely watercolor or other type of medium, or possibly hand colored photo of a young girl. Victorian Era. Signed by the artist in the left bottom section F Mejasky . (I found similar artwork by the same artist displayed at Princeton University Art Museum - please see the last photo for reference). The portrait is enclosed into a wood gilded frame and is covered with glass. The frame a securely sealed and this is why it is hard to tell what type of medium was used. I do think this is a painted portrait most likely. There is a note attached in the back, mentioning the name of the girl: “ Mabel (? It is hard to read the first name) Metcalf ”. Possibly for “Mabel Metcalf Fahnestock”, the wife or Charles Fahnestock. His father, Harris Charles Fahnestock was a known American investment banker during Gilded Age era. I found this picture together with a picture of Harris Charles’s wife and assumed it could have originated in the same family, however, this is my guess and not a fact. There is also a name of the art studio on the reverse side of the frame. Condition: wear and loss to gilt on the wood frame, also notable chipping to the frame. Glass in in good condition with minor wear. Some wear to colors and other flaws on the portrait . (please see pictures for additional details) Overall good condition considering the age). Measures: frame approximately 6”H and 5” wide Please see pictures for more details. I’m happy to provide additional photographs upon request.
