Description: Victorian Brooch Whitby Jet Lily of the Valley Here is a lovely original Victorian era mourning brooch of carved Whitby Jet lilies of the valley. Brooch measures 1 5/8" in width by 1 7/8" in height with period correct tube hinge and "c" clasp closure. Mourning jewelry has been around since at least the 16th century, but it is widely associated with the Victorian Era, when mass production made it affordable. The trend reached its high point after the death of Prince Albert in 1861, when Queen Victoria, as well as members of her court, wore black clothing and matching mourning jewelry for decades. Thanks to this royal example, black jewelry became quite fashionable. Please ask any questions prior to purchase. Picturese provided as part of the description, and all measurements are to be considered approximate. Reasonable offers will be considered. Very good gift for vintage Collectors! Fast shipping! Always pack very carefully in box! Photos are accurate! thank you!
