Joan’s sister is Dora Tse-Pe Pena and their family is known for exceptional traditional pottery. He uses traditional Zia pottery designs and rock art images and patterns associated with social and spiritual themes. He is credited with developing a new style of painting Pueblo pottery. He specializes in painting handmade pottery using acrylic paints. His designs employ a wide array of symbols, sometimes drawing from ancient rock art. He also uses a spatter technique reminiscent of Joe Herrera and Tony Da, two contemporaries of modern styles. Ralph studied at the Art Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM. He has painted a mural of two buckskin horses on the façade of the Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion church in Zia Pueblo. “Ralph transcends his success as an easel painter by also painting pottery in his own unique way. His pots are easily recognizable. He uses bold colors and ancient designs to create fine art pieces that look both ancient and modern simultaneously. He is a true artist in his constant innovations, developing a myriad of variations on southwest Indian pottery.” (Schaaf, 2002)
