Description: The patch shown (VAQ-308) was the original issue when the squadron was formed. The squadron was established at NAS Alameda, California on May 2, 1970, under the command of CDR Gregory Bambo Jr.. VAQ-308 was the first squadron of the first reserve Carrier Air Group to be commissioned and proudly displayed "Alpha Foxtrot" as the CAG designation. These were the first A3 Skywarriors and the first Heavy Attack Squadron ever assigned to the Naval Air Reserve. Along with other squadrons at NAS Alameda, NAS Point Mugu, NAS Whidbey Island, and NAS Miramar, this assemblage became Carrier Air Wing Reserve Thirty (CVWR- 30). The Alfa Foxtrot was later removed from the vertical stabilizer and replaced with the CVWR-30 insignia, the legendary whale was painted on the top of the stabilizer fin with the light beacon in place as the whales eye, and the squadrons mascot (the Griffin) was painted aft of the cockpit.
