Vanilla planifolia is a vine/climber in the Orchidaceae family. A native to Mexico and Belize. Common names include flat-leaved vanilla and West Indian vanilla. It is a primary source for vanilla flavoring. It prefers hot, wet, tropical climates for best results. It grows to around 75 feet once it matures in Mexico. It will only get 10-20 feet if in a container. The leaves are evergreen and succulent flat-bladed, around 5 inches long. It will require a structure to grow on. Flowers must be hand-pollinated if you want fruits. The bees that pollinate it are only in Mexico. The flowers are yellow-green and in an axillary cluster that has 10-20 flowers. The flowers will only last one day. It prefers to grow in part to full shade with daily misting and watering. Zones 10-11 Germination Soak seeds in a 4% sodium hypochlorite or (bleach) solution for 90 minutes. Sprinkle seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 60-90 days.
