Description: USS CLEVELAND LPD-7 naval first day cover with a postmark from Findlay, Ohio dated Jan 9, 2022. Color photo of ship at sea printed on cachet #2345 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. The third US Navy ship named for the state, USS Cleveland was built in MS by Ingalls Shipbuilding, laid down in 1964, launched and christened on May 7, 1966. She was commissioned on 21 April 1967, with the Vietnam War in full action. Cover franked with a 15 cent Vietnam Campaign Ribbon stamp #1802 and a 57 cent flag stamp # 5657 (FDOI). This fine 570 foot Austin Class amphibious transport dock was ordered to Vietnam in 1968 and earned 23 Vietnam Service Medals. In 1973 she joined the Operation End Sweep that cleared mines in North Vietnam. See the web pages for the details of her service. She was decommissioned in 2011 and placed in reserve in Hawaii.
