USS Bon Homme Richard: This 872 foot Essex Class aircraft carrier was commissioned 26 November 1944 and earned one battle star for the Battle of Okinawa in June 1945. She was inactivated from 1947 to 1951 and then earned five battle stars during the Korean War. The "Bonny Dick" also served in the Vietnam War, making six deployments to Vietnam waters.The vessel was named for Commodore John Paul Jones' French built frigate. He is considered the father of the United States Navy. He was a Revolutionary War naval hero who is quoted as saying "I have not yet begun to fight" during a battle in 1779, and is buried with honor at the US Naval Academy.
