Description: USMC ECOTAT MULTI PURPOSE PONCHO SYSTEM MPPS Up for auction is the shelter portion of a United States Marine Corps issue Multipurpose Poncho System (MPPS) in very good condition. Extremely rare and hard to find, the shelter portion includes an Ecotat multi-purpose poncho/shelter (Freedom Shelter) in the USMC Coyote Brown color. The taping on the interior seams has deteriorated and is starting to peel off. This will need to be replaced to restore 100% waterproof functionality. The fabric of the overall stuff sack has tiny holes as pictured. There are two vents on the shelter that came with two plastic “stays” (2 per vent) to assist in keeping them open. The plastic has broken on two of these stays (1 per vent) and unfortunately this was very common on Ecotat’s. The exact age of this set is unknown, but they were manufactured under a 1992 contract and the preliminary operator's manual is dated 1994. At the point it was printed, national stock numbers had not been assigned so I don't know if this item ever made it into general use. Some more details of an Ecotat: This is a 8’ long by 38” wide x 24” high tent that can also serve as a long "great" or short "anorak" coat, poncho, sit shelter, sleeping bag cover, bivouac sack, A-frame tent, lean-to, field expedient rescue litter, tarp or an emergency body bag. The shelter may be used as a one-person tent or two may be joined to accommodate three people. The all-season tent comes with a mosquito net that zips in one side for hot summer nights to keep bugs out. Two vents provide additional air circulation if needed to control condensation.
