Description: RARE COLLECTIBLE APOLLO ITEM!! UNIQUE MAPS AND PHOTOS!!This is USGS Professional Paper 880, Geology of the Apollo 14 Landing Site in the Fra Mauro Highlands. Published in 1977, this is one of only a few rare publications the USGS did on behalf of NASA in connection with the Apollo program. This 103-page book contains unique color maps available nowhere else, diagrams of the landing area, dozens of photos taken at the time, many of which are shots of the collected specimens in place prior to collection. There are also many diagrams constructed to show several sides of the same rock. The pictures include many of outcrops and partially buried boulders as well as some pictures showing various pieces of the astronauts’ equipment. This book gave me a much clearer idea of the working lives of the crew while on the Moon. It made me realize just how well conceived and well executed the mission was, and what a tremendous accomplishment it was (and still is) to have done it. This volume is in good condition and appears to have been used very little, if at all. It comes complete with the book and all seven of the large plates that are in a pocket in the back of the book. Just to give you an idea of what is here, here is a list of the plates: Plate 1: Geologic Map and Schematic Section of the Apollo 14 Landing SitePlate 2: Map Showing Traverse Line, Stations, Features Identified In Station Panoramas, and Samples Collected at Apollo 14 Landing SitePlates 3-6: Apollo 14 Panoramas Showing Sample Collection Localities and Features Identified:Plate 3: (Panoramas 1-5, 15) From Lunar Module Windows and near the Lunar ModulePlate 4: (Panoramas 6-8) At Stations A, B, and B1, and Shaded Relief Maps of Stations A and BPlate 5: (Panoramas 9-11) At Stations B2, B3, and C’, and Shaded Relief Maps of Stations B3 and C’Plate 6: (Panoramas 12-14) At Stations F, G, and H, and Shaded Relief Maps of Stations G, G1, and HPlate 7: Map Showing Boulder Density and Distribution of Rock Particles at the Apollo 14 Landing Site The two geologic maps (Plates 1 & 7) were only made available in this report. They were never part of the series of pre-mission maps created for the Apollo missions. The book also contains 79 figures and 11 tables. The maps and panoramas in this set are unique to this item. There is no other way to get these maps than with this report. Here is a rare opportunity for collectors of Apollo program literature and memorabilia. This soft cover book is in good condition, looking as though it has rarely if ever been used. There is some bending of the soft paper cover around the edges, and very minor tears due to the thickness and weight of the map pocket. This is a rare report seldom offered on Ebay and a must for all Apollo mission enthusiasts. The photos above show: 1: Front2: A full color map3: Another full color map4-10: Two of the four panorama sheets and close ups from the panoramas 11: Back The item shown is the one you will receive. One of the coolest things in the book is a large table of the rock samples they collected. With most of the rocks there is a transcript of the conversation they were having with Houston and each other at the time. It really brings it to life! This book gave me more perspective on the lunar missions than I ever had before. The astronauts worked incredibly hard while they were on the moon and accomplished a tremendous amount. This book is as much a tribute to their hard work as it is a compilation of what was learned from it. The photographs really contributed to my understanding of the mission and made me proud of all the great men and women that worked so hard to make it all possible. The pictures include many of outcrops and partially buried boulders as well as some pictures showing various pieces of the astronauts’ equipment. The softcover book is printed on high quality glossy paper and is in good condition. The maps are also in excellent condition. The condition is impressive given its age of nearly 50 years. All in all this is a very rare and highly desirable treatise on the Apollo 14 site and would make a tremendous addition to any Apollo program collection. Please read all the condition notes.
